Day 1: The opening of the Allianz Youth Sailing World Championships in pretty pictures!

Wind and smiles  at the Youth Sailing World’s

After a windy first day on the water where the sailors got to practice before starting the real deal, it’s time to get dressed for the official opening ceremony at the beach. It was a super good day to practice wind, waves and current, the sailors told us on their way to the opening.

Bikes bikes and more bikes

All 450 sailors, their coaches and team managers got on their bikes tonight to destination Jumpteam, home of the kiteboarders this week. They all got on stage tonight to proudly carry their flag and celebrate the representation of their country on an international battle field!

The mixing of the waters

At every Youth Sailing World Championships each nation brings a bottle of water from their home country with them. The tradition of the  ‘mixing of the waters’ truly shows how connected we all are across the globe.

Tournament director Dorian van Rijsselberghe

Tournament director Dorian van Rijsselberghe arrived in The Netherlands last week and joined us for the opening tonight. He’s very proud and happy they managed to organise this high standard competition with the help of all their partners and volunteers. “The Youth World Championships really taught me how to lose and become a better athlete.”

Herring the Dutch Way

In The Netherlands herring is often paired with raw onions and gherkins. Some people love to eat it on a bread roll and call it ‘broodje haring’. Though the only true Dutch way to eat herring is vertically, and that’s what all sailors got to try at the opening ceremony.

Generating energy by bike for the official opening

Stefan Stüven, sailing for Trinidad and Tobago (TTO) in the Male One Person Dinghy had the honor to generate energy from the water added by all participating countries. Which was then used to officially open the Youth Sailing World Championships.

Together with David Graham, the organisation officially opened the event. The Youth World Sailing Championships is on! Tomorrow is the first race day with racing scheduled to start at 11 am. Live tracking and racing updates can be found at worldsailingywc.org. We also try to keep you posted on Instagram and Twitter
