Volunteer Equipment Inspection

General

Before the WC starts, all boats must be checked. This is to ensure that everyone sails with the same materials as much as possible so that a fair competition can take place. There are also requirements for the materials to ensure safety.

The control will take place 2 to 3 days before the start of the event. Every sailor/team is given a time slot in where they have to be present. Under the direction of the international measurer (=IM, appointed from World Sailing) and with the help of a national equipment inspector (NTO), you help to achieve this. You will be assigned to 1 class on a day (preferably for all days). You will be explained which inspection(s) you will perform. Of course, you will be supported in this.

The WC in Scheveningen and the Braassem are selection races for the Olympics. So the stakes will be high. This means that when in doubt, we always consult each other.

What do you need to be able to do?

  • Preferably you have a background in (racing) sailing
  • You can hold a conversation in English (this is the common language on the floor)
  • You are a social person and you can explain to the sailor(s) that something is not up to standard
  • You are meticulous: measuring is knowing
  • When in doubt, you always contact the IM or NTO. You do not take decisions yourself at this point.

What might your tasks be?

Separate materials will be checked for each class. Below are some examples of what can be checked:

  • The sails (do they fit within the contours, are the right numbers in the sails)
  • The hull (e.g. weight) and boards (for kite and IQFoils)
  • The masts (e.g. weight, sizes)
  • Rudders, daggerboards and foils (e.g. shape and weight)
  • Life jackets, tow lines, helmet, trapezes, etc.
  • At the end of the inspection, the document is checked and we must ensure that bow stickers are pasted (as per the sticking instructions)

When do you need to be available?

Days when we will measure are: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and the 13th of August in Scheveningen. For this role, it is our strong preference that you are present all days. At the moment, we do not yet know the exact working hours. But keep in mind that we will start from 8am in the morning and work until 6pm in the evening. Do you have any questions? Then send an email to volunteers@allianzsailingworlds.nl. If you are enthusiastic and would like to apply straight away, you can of course also do so by using the button below.
